For non-Japanese readers
PC2M Website Transcoder for Mobile Clients
This website is introducing an open source web application which converts web pages and images, originally dedicated to PC based web browsers, available on web-capable mobile devices such as cellphones and PDAs. No special features like Java, or no additional software/hardware installation is necessary for the client side.
The program is being designed dedicated to Japanese web-capable cellphones, such as NTT DoCoMo's i-mode and au/KDDI's EZweb. But thanks to PHP's multibytes string functions, it may be adopted to other languages too.
Visit our multi-language version demonstration site (UTF-8) and see how it works.
Note that the demo site adopts ‘UTF-8’ as a character encoding to display multilingual characters. So you need a UTF-8 compliant system, font and web browser (e.g. Windows XP plus Internet Explorer 6).
You may not be able to see the demo with your mobile client since encodings and characters supported by actual mobile clients are very limited.
Features
- You can access any web pages and images with your mobile client via this program as a gateway, even if the page requires an authentication or requires transmitting cookies and even if your mobile client does not have these functions, because this program handles everything necessary on behalf of your mobile client.
- If your mobile client does not have enough memory to display entire part of a web page, this program divides the page according to the available memory size automatically. It also converts web images to client's supported graphic format and resizes the scale fit to its screen size.
- You can choose display mode as you like. You may choose showing texts only if you would like to save communication costs, while you may have rather similar appearance to PC web browsers when showing images as well.
- URI box displayed always on top is used also as a search box. You can enter search criteria there to perform a search directly on your favorite sites. By default, it will show Google's web search result (without prefix), and will show the search result of Wikipedia English with ‘wpe’ prefix (type ‘wpe einstein’ in the box for example).
- Inpage search, access history, converting RSS feeds and more...
How to make it work for you
The current public release of the program is for Japanese only.
Necessary changes regarding language and encoding is in fact very easy. But to make the program work at its best for you, some technical information of your target clients will be required. If you have any interest in this program, please send an email to the following address (displayed as an image). Thank you.
